I agree with you that John probably did not get his theology from Paul. It seems a wee little bit inconsistent to think he wrote based on observation, then conclude he learned about the truth regarding Jesus Christ from Paul.

Considering the book of Acts, and having studied John and Paul's writings, I think John got his theology from observation and learning directly from the Source during the earthly ministry. Paul's probably came through the educational process during his time in the wilderness. Either way, I would conclude the Holy Spirit was more the source as he led their mental processes.
