Faith Justifies . . . and Works Sanctify and Perfect

jwmcmac's picture

I heard at least two Scripturally based sermons this week which seemed to say . . . to me . . .

that Faith Justifies us . . . giving us an advance on Saving Grace . . . so to speak . . .

But then . . . this revelation of Scripture did not seem to be left 'alone' . . . seeming to be followed by this . . . about 'Works' . . .

'Works' are the 'Actions of Faith' done in Love . . . which Actions 'if done with Love' . . . Bring us to 'Perfection' and 'Sanctification' . . . in that order . . . I mean Faith coming before the other two . . .

. . . perhaps this being why . . . as James says in Scripture . . . that . . . 'Faith without Works is Dead'.

Just as soon as Abraham 'Believed' the LORD . . . followed by Abraham's Receiving the Advance on Grace which 'freely' Justified him in GOD's eyes . . . following this . . . Abraham then set out working for and doing . . . exactly and promptly . . . what the LORD had commanded him to do.

It is not 'hearers of the Word . . . but . . . doers of the Word' . . . these 'Doers of Word' are they which 'please GOD'.

. . . two small examples . . . one from the New and one seemingly referring to the Old testament but in the New . . .

James 1:

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Romans 2:

13 For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

It seems to me that GOD requires ACTION . . . GOD requires a Response of Action . . . done in Faith and in Love.

Faith alone is Dead . . .

. . . even if . . .

. . . even if . . .

. . . even if . . . Justification came to us by Faith Alone . . . so to speak . . . as an advance . . . as an advance of Grace which gives us the power to . . . ACT . . . the power to Act in LOVE . . . to be 'Doers' of the Faith which we profess to Believe . . .

Faith alone . . . is Dead . . . as James says . . . but why ? . . .

. . . if there is no Action which proves our Faith . . . which brings our Faith to Life by Action . . . which Incarnates our Faith with Actions of Love . . . then . . .

. . . even if we have Faith that can move mountains . . . without Actions of Love . . . it is as clanging cymbals . . .

. . . even if we have Faith that can work miracles . . . but without Actions of Love . . . which Actions Prove and Incarnate our Faith . . . without those Actions of Love (Obedience being a big part of Love) . . . then . . . even if we have Faith of great proportion . . .

. . . then the advance on Grace which we have received . . . even this will be taken away . . .

. . . but if we 'invest' this Grace through Actions of Love . . . Faith in Action . . . so to speak . . . then the Grace which we have Received by Advance . . . will grow and grow in us and in the Life of those around us too . . .

***

It also seemed . . . to my ears . . . that Justification was not the same as Salvation.

Justification of and by Faith . . . merely seemed to dispose us to Receive Salvation . . . is what it seemed to be saying to me . . .

It was our Response to this Grace of Justification . . . our Response of Grace to Grace . . . or is it our Response of Nature to Grace . . . or both . . .

. . . Grace working on our Nature . . . demands a Response of our Nature by this Gift of Grace to this Sanctifying Grace . . . a Response of Faith in Actions/Works of Love . . . becoming Doers of what we Profess to Believe . . . and doing this for the motive of Love . . . which means Obedience.

Enough . . .

Say what we will . . . Believe all we want . . . but also . . . 'Do' HIS Will . . . in Love . . . in Obedience . . . Serving GOD . . . Serving our neighbor.

GOD Bless us all.

"Mike says,

Scripture says that there are false witnesses, false teachers, false prophets and false apostles. You cannot deny that with the potential for false leadership that there will be assemblies that are simply "false".

The worst of it is, that the false grows among the true.

Scripture attests to that over and over again.

True enough . . . and evident as well . . .

but there is only One Church . . . not thousands.

There is only one Church which has been here from the beginning even to the here and now and which 'Speaks with Authority' . . . which was sent . . . which has structure and clarity of Doctrine and Sacrament and which will be here at the end to be crucified by the anti-christ . . . the anti-christ being all those who not only oppose and rejected CHRIST . . . but clearly this referring to all of those who reject HIS Church which is HIS Mystical Body on earth.

Jeff attacks the sins of the members of the Church as if he thinks this to be attacking a false Church.

This action of his is as if he were attacking GOD and Heaven because of the sins of the devil and a third of the angels.

There may be those in the Church who have abused their authority . . . but Jeff condemns the whole Body in his concentrating on those amongst us who are sinners (all of us) . . . Jeff condemns the Whole CHRIST in his broad condemnation of the Church . . . and I contend that he does not know what he is doing . . . just as the Jews did not know what they were doing in condemning CHRIST in their crucifying HIM.

You are correct in your assessment of Pride . . . but who is more Prideful than . . . the one who condemns, hypocritically, the Church for Her having sinners in Her midst, they not recognizing those sinners in Her bosom who are becoming Saints because of Her Sacraments and Prayers in behalf of Her members . . .

The Jews did not recognize CHRIST because HE was only a man claiming to be GOD.

The modern 'Christian', no less than the Jew of that day, fails to recognize the Church, their Mother, as CHRIST's Mystical Body, because She has sinners . . . they concentrating on that aspect of Her membership rather than on the Sacraments and Teachings and the Saints in the making . . . they who are being formed into CHRIST while in the Womb of their Mother the Church . . . being washed, fed, clothed by the Sacramental CHRIST in Her Womb . . . She being overshadowed by the HOLY SPIRIT and Indwelled by the Same HOLY SPIRIT . . . HE accomplishing this Great and Holy Work in Her and in Her members.

Jeff doesn't believe that any institution can accomplish this . . . even with the Help of the HOLY SPIRIT acting upon Her and Her members.

Jeff only believes that this can be accomplished in an invisible manner and individually.

Jeff is right and he is wrong . . .

. . . because he fails to recognize and discern the Body . . . failing to recognize the Body of Believers who are the Church and because I believe that He also fails to recognize the Body of CHRIST in the Blessed Sacrament . . . doing this in the face of John VI . . . I believe Jeff being among those who would have walked with HIM no more . . . since CHRIST was only a man claiming that we had to 'eat' HIS Body, Real Meat and Drink HIS Blood, Real Drink.

The best that Jeff has come to be able to do in this instance of John VI . . . unless I am reading him wrong . . . is to self-interpret this passage 'Spiritually only' rather than to accept it as did Peter and the other Apostles as being somehow the Truth . . . a Sacramental Real and Substantial Presence of HIS Real Body and Blood and Soul and Divinity . . . HE being made fully Really Present in this Sacrament and feeding us with this Eternal Bread which was soon to be Sacrificed Once historically at Calvary . . . and which Bread would be made Really Present over and over again for all time each and every time we participate in and Consecrate this Bread in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

To me, this and these are those things which Protestants in general or specifically reject . . . and do not 'discern' . . . in failing to 'discern' the Body of the LORD . . . both in the Mystical Body which is HIS Church and in the Sacrament of the Bread of Life, which is the Holy Eucharist.

Jeff may be correct about some who have abused their office . . . but he is wrong about the vast majority of those.

We will always be ironing out the wrinkles . . . and the HOLY SPIRIT always is doing this . . . and the Hierarchy of the Church, Peter and the Apostles, is assisting HIM in the doing of this . . . and this in spite of the Judases.

Jeff cannot seem to see anyone in Authority who is not Prideful.

Well . . . in the history of the world . . . and in the history of the Church . . . I have a great problem with Jeff in these regards . . . as I see very many who have been in Authority and have been humble . . . starting with CHRIST and going back and forward from there . . . Mary and the Church being the most humble, despite some of the members of the Church who have demonstrated otherwise.

It is difference of view. It is a different 'discerning' of the Body than Jeff's.

. . .

GOD Bless us all.
