Hello and welcome to the Protestant study group. A place to study and discuss various teachings within the Protestant churches. This is not a place of bickering so leave the attitudes at the door. (Bickering and fighting will get you shown to the door and banned.)

Missions and Acts - Covenantal Approach?

Basically this is just a "what do we learn about the Church from Acts?" thread. As we watch Paul and Barnabas and then Paul and Silas building the Church in Acts, what can we learn about their concept of the Church as a whole? Robert suggested my original plan was too cumbersome so asked me to create new threads.

Jesus said he was sent to seek and saved the lost sheep of Israel - yet he still had a place for Gentiles who were present when he was preaching. When the new Church began in Acts i took a sign from God before the Apostles were prepared to take the Gospel to the Gentiles at all. Then when Paul did, he went first to the Jews and then to the Greeks. We explore this aspect of his method of missions.

Missions and Acts - the Message

As we study Acts is seems there is a clear difference between the way many Churches today preach the Gospel and the way it was done in Acts. Is this a reality we might ask or is it only an impression? Then too there is a difference in the content of Paul's sermon in Acts 17 when compared with Peter's in Acts 2. We look at the message preached in Acts and its implications for preaching today.

Acts The Church and Ministerial Training

There are two aspects to this thread: the training of the local congregation (for the work of ministry - as in Ephesians) and the theological training of ministers (or pastors).

Acts, Missions and Church Government

This particular thread deals with the role of other "permanent structures" in the Church. We can all appreciate (from Acts 15) that there is need for occasional gatherings of the wider Church to deal with problems which affect more than just the congregations in a local region. But permanent sections above the local congregation?

Acts and The Body of Christ - Local to National

This thread looks at the relationship between the local Church and the Church overall as seen in the Council at Jerusalem particularly (Acts 15). It discusses the role played by the council and how it dealt with the problem of the Gentiles Churches and the Jewish customs based on the Law.

Doctrinal creeds and their understanding

This thread is an exercise to seek out a number of "representative" statements of "distinctiveness" based on the doctrinal creeds of various Protestant groups. The group will use the different Protestant Creeds, which could provide both parameters and structure for discussion and then figure out a way in which we could apply a format to them to make fair comparison.
