Christ removes all barriers to catholicity of His church through faith

JeffLogan's picture

Thinking about Christ and how He breaks down all barriers and spoils all principalities and powers which prevent true universality, true catholicity, of His body, the church...

Has anyone ever considered that a living faith is not achieved by adding our works to our faith but rather, that faith is a gift from God which being quickened by the Holy Spirit produces obedience (good works)? (The keyword here is "quickened". It would serve you well to consult your Strong's Concordance.)

Think about this verse and tell me what it means:

And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. -Acts 5:32 (KJV)

But first, before you answer, tell me what this means to demonstrate your wisdom:

"Love means never having to say you're sorry." (Love Story, The movie.)

Does it mean...

    1) Love does nothing to warrant an apology

    2) Love takes no account of injury

    3) Other (explain)

Now answer the verse in question:

And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. -Acts 5:32 (KJV)

Does it mean...

    1) God only gives His Holy Spirit to those who obey Him

    2) God gives His Holy Spirit to men so they might obey Him

    3) Other (explain)

This is a discovery exercise and not a theological debate. Opinions are welcomed but scriptural support would be even better. Be sure to interpret your scriptures so we can understand how you are using them. Commentaries may be insightful but a paraphrase in your own words would be appreciated and would demonstrate you understand your subject matter.

Noshic, I believe you are

I believe you are very close to the correct order of operations.

1) Hear the Word . . . Hopefully from the Church (the Eunuch on the trail with Philip) . . . or perhaps . . . from some other source, the Scriptures perhaps being the main other source . . . though we can get this wrong, even Scripture saying this about itself in many places.

2) Repent of those sins which the Word and the Spirit Reveal and Convict you of (the message of both John the Baptist and CHRIST . . . and Scripture)

3) Believe what you have heard . . . and then search for the Truth of that Word with your whole Heart and Mind and with the whole strength of our Soul.

4) Be Baptized in both the Water and the SPIRIT.

5) Fight the 'Good Fight' the rest of the way . . . making use of the Church and the Sacraments to do so . . . unto the forming of the Whole CHRIST in the world and in us.

You are correct in that anywhere and any time along the way we can 'choose' to sin or we choose to continue in our 'Repentance' and 'Love' and 'Obedience' unto the end of our Journey in CHRIST . . . picking up our Cross Daily . . . and Following CHRIST to our own Calvary together with and in HIM . . . living a Life of Sacrifice together with and in HIM that we could not otherwise do without CHRIST and the HOLY SPIRIT.

But the journey just 'begins' when we have 'found' HIM.

The journey ends at the judgement . . . when we receive a reward for our works in following HIM or when we receive damnation for not Believing HIM and/or for not following HIM.

It is our Free-will Choice in these that will determine our end.

Only CHRIST can judge this.

We do not even 'know' if we have accomplished this . . . though we can have a certain 'Confidence' and 'Trust' . . . searching ourselves in the Word and in the Teachings and practices of the Church . . . one of which is the Sacrament of Confession . . .

. . . and thus . . . though we can be 'Confident' . . . still . . . we must work out our Salvation in CHRIST with a certain amount of fear and trembling, lest we fall and lose our reward.

Repent, Believe, be Baptized . . . Run the Race to the end . . . Living a Life of Love and Sacrifice in and with and through CHRIST, in Obedience to HIS Commands which HE sent the Church to Teach and Preach to the ends of the world.

Many here leave out the Church . . . at least they don't see the need for a visible Church . . .

GOD Bless us all.
