Call no man father.

De Maria's picture

Hello all,

On another topic, the Esteemed Julabee Jones is castigating Catholics roundly for calling priests, father.

She bases that opinion on Jesus' injunction, "call no man father". Now I don't see any qualifications there. Jesus didn't say, don't call priests father. He said
And call no man your father upon the earth.... Matthew 23:9

Yet, I've met no one, Protestant or Catholic, who doesn't call their dad, father. Except a few disrespectful children.

So I was wondering, what do you call your father? A question, by the way, which the sweet Julabee, has yet to answer.

Call no man your father upon the earth

Matthew 23

9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.
9 Et patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram: unus est enim pater vester qui in cælis est.

The Word of God can speak volumes to the simplest human mind and still confound the wisest. .....This prerogative belongs to God along who is our spiritual Father who guides mature men who humble themselves as children. No human being can stand in this position without interfering with the Father/child relationship between man and God and bringing condemnation upon himself--presuming himself worthy to become another man's spiritual Father.

2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

1 Peter 5:2-3 (KJV)

Are you teaching us something? Should we consider you our teacher? Lets back up for a minute and look at the verse again:

Matthew 23

9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is YOUR father, who is in heaven.

The key word in that text is YOUR.

We don't call Priests OUR Fathers, MY father or YOUR father.

We use the word Father as a title for priests. The custom is from Scripture:
Judges 17:10
And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in.

Note that he does not say, "MY" father and priest.

In the same way, we never refer to OUR priests as OUR fathers.

For example. If we speak of the priest at our parish, we will say, Fr. Dan is the priest at our parish.

But if we look at the words of Jesus Christ in the Bible, He did not say, "don't call priests your father" But call "no man your father". So, I ask you, what do you call "your" dad?
