“I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me” (Jeremiah 32:40).

Another verse that’s my favorite.

For how can I really have the right kind of fear before a Loving God?

While there are those who try to explain that to “fear” God means we just ought to revere or respect Him; but, the Son of God made it clear that we should really fear God. Luke 12:5 states, “But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” We read also in Matthew 10:28, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”

God is described there not just loving, but fearsome! He is worthy not just to be loved; He deserves also to be afraid of.

Thanks to Jeremiah 32:40. I don’t have to rely on my own natural human reaction, or tendency to really fear God. Besides, I cannot generate that kind of fear. But, by His Grace, He could “inspire” me to have the kind of fear – fear that will not make me shudder, drive me away in terror, or recoil in timidity, but fear that will “create” in me greater admiration for Him and draw me to Him!

"Yet I will
rejoice in the LORD,
I will take joy
in the God of my salvation"
(Habakkuk 3:18, ESV).
