What are the basic criterion that leeds to back-sliding

Backsliding just prior to Christ's second advent

There is a book here at CCEL in which I found this description of backsliding. (There were many hits on CCEL for "backsliding" but this one stood out as most pertinent. The "London Baptist Confession of Faith" had a sub-entry titled, "The various causes of backsliding" within chapter 17 but I could not locate the text, only the outline. Besides, I am partial to this writer because someone had given me a book called "Steps to Christ" which I held onto for decades before reading it. Then finally in 1995, as my attention was drawn to the events transpiring at Waco, Texas, I read this little book. It proved to be a great blessing to me because I surrendered my life to Christ while reading it.)

When the Saviour pointed out to His followers the signs of His return, He foretold the state of backsliding that would exist just prior to His second advent. There would be, as in the days of Noah, the activity and stir of worldly business and pleasure seeking—buying, selling, planting, building, marrying, and giving in marriage—with forgetfulness of God and the future life. For those living at this time, Christ’s admonition is: “Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.” “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” Luke 21:34, 36.

But God wants us to be saved. This is why God has given those living in the last days the three angels messages of Revelation 14.

The first angel's message calls us to remember that God is the Creator of the world. And by virtue of the fact that He is our great benefactor is justified in claiming our worship and adoration. And, very importantly, that the hour of God's judgment has come. During the proclamation of these messages God is reviewing the case of everyone who professes to be His child. How will they respond to the messages of the three angels?

The second angel's message calls us to see the backslidden condition of the churches who are becoming more and more like the world and less and less like Christ. They are learning to trust to their own abilities and less in the power of God and thus are in a steady state of declination. They seek for earthly legislative bodies to enact laws to forbid immoral practices by severe penalties while ignoring the laws of God forbidding these things. As they trust more and more to earthly princes they fall further and further away from God.

The third angel's message warns us that if we do not separate from the worldliness that exists in the churches then we will not receive the seal of God but will instead receive the mark of the beast. It is the one that we obey that is our master. And, if we obey fallen Babylon by keeping the traditions and commandments of men we will receive the mark of their authority--the mark of allegiance to the kingdom of this world. If we stand against the world to obey God by keeping His commandments and the faith of Jesus then we will be sealed by the Holy Ghost as children of God in allegiance with His kingdom.

The final message is clear. Everyone receives either the seal of God or the mark of the beast. Obedience to God's law is the seal of God's children. Though we cannot obey the law in our own strength, yet when we choose to obey God then God supplies the power for us to obey through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    1 John 3:7-10
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning...In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil...

    2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

But the backsliding is caused by a greater love of the world than of God. When we refuse to relinquish the things of the world they prevent our advancement toward godliness. The Lord wants everyone to be saved but He will not force us to choose Him over the things of the world. And, since we cannot take sin into heaven we must remain with the sinners. And, instead of receiving the rewards of the saints we partake in the punishment of the lost. The third angel's message swells into a loud cry that calls God's people out of Babylon so that they do not partake of her sins and receive of her plagues.

There is but one definition of sin, it is "the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4. The churches have fallen into sin in that they do not keep the law of God. Thus, they are reckoned with the sinners and judged worthy of punishment.
