Born again a child of God

>>>What is the purpose of Baptism? (Please use scripture references)<<<

The remission of sins:
Mark 1:4
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Baptism is the work of God. It is the freely given gift of justification of the soul. The sign of water washes the body representing and signifying the washing of regeneration which is produced by the Holy Spirit.

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Baptism is radically different than the justification of Abraham. Abraham was justified by grace through his faith in God.

Romans 4:16
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

But Baptism gives us a participation in the Divine Life of God. Through Baptism we are born again in Christ Jesus and become a new creation.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

This Divine Life, this Sanctifying Grace was released to us on the Cross by Jesus Christ. Baptism is one of the means which Christ provided for us to apply His merits, His grace to our soul that we might be saved:

Hebrews 5:9
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Mark 16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
