Are tounges a mystery language known only by God or anther language?

During the pentecost Peter is said to speak in anther tounge, could this just be the Greek language. Also in 1Corthinians where it is talking about spiritual gifts it says that if one is speaking in tounges in must be interperted or it is for nothing. If the spiritual gift is anther language can't anyone learn it and that is not a gift from God. Does anyone have some insight on the subject of tounges.

tongues

Sounds like you have come across some of the Pentecostal believers which are the fastest growing branch of Christianity today. I recommend that you carefully study each instance in the book of Acts where tongues are mentioned and then reread the chapters in 1 Corinthians that you referenced. I personally believe the genuine manifestation of the Holy Spirit known as the gift of tongues is a mystery language that only God and maybe the angels understand. The fact that those present at Pentecost heard this language in their own was a miracle done by God. If it were another known or dead language then we would not need the other gift of the Holy Spirit which is interpretation of tongues to help us understand what is said. Most of the tongues you might hear in contemporary Church services, and I say this frankly, are gibberish or fleshly, man made occurrences to appear spiritual or like the real gift of the Holy Spirit. That is one of the reasons why we need the gift of discernment as well along with the oversight of our pastors and elders. I have attended too many Church services where utter nonsense was being voiced by misguided people to the confusion and harm of the hearers. Many congregations, in their well meaning effort to restore the Church to its early glory, have promoted the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit without the wise and mature judgment that the Apostles of the Early Church had. All I am really saying is that we must be careful when we are claiming we are speaking with God's voice and that would certainly include any operation of the gift of prophecy as well.
